The Divorce That Never Ends

Divorce can be legally finished and emotionally infinite. With children, it is not an ending. It is a long-term co-parenting state.

Hidden rule: with children, divorce is governance. Your child will live inside the emotional climate you create.

The trigger is a national pattern

Switzerland’s latest vital statistics report an increase in divorces in 2024. The theme here is not divorce itself. It’s what happens after: divorce that is legally finished and emotionally infinite.

With children, divorce is not an ending

With children, divorce is not an ending. It is a re-architecture. And re-architecture can become chronic conflict when repair is weak.

Handover tension. Schedule sabotage. Money disputes. Hostile messaging disguised as clarification. Conflict about new partners. Conflict about parenting styles. The marriage ended. The war moved into logistics.

The marriage can end. The conflict can keep renewing itself, because the logistics keep renewing themselves.

Series note: the battlefield is not romance. It is coordination.

Why high-order life makes it easier to loop

High-order societies make divorce safer and more feasible. That is often necessary. But high-order cultures also tend to lack thick communal rituals for what comes after.

In more entangled societies, extended family and community can impose closure, sometimes unjustly, sometimes helpfully. In high-order life, privacy prevails. If two adults don’t repair, there is no natural third party holding the system. The conflict becomes a closed loop.

Silent conflict, strategic conflict

And because the culture prizes calm, the conflict often becomes silent and strategic rather than loud. Politeness becomes a weapon. Neutrality becomes avoidance. Children become the weather station: they feel tension long before adults admit it.

The damage is not only emotional

The never-ending divorce teaches a child something corrosive: relationships don’t end, they mutate into chronic tension. The child may grow up hyper-attuned, emotionally cautious, good at managing adults. Competence mistaken for health.

The adult standard

We stop treating divorce as either pure liberation or pure failure. With children, divorce is governance. It is a long-term co-parenting state.

Your ex is no longer your partner, but they remain your child’s parent. Your child will live inside the emotional climate you create.

Ending question

If divorce is a re-architecture, are you building a stable bridge, or designing a battlefield your child must cross every week.
